On the afternoon of September 24, 2023, focusing on the key issues of mathematics discipline construction and talent cultivation, the School of Mathematical Sciences of Shenzhen University held a seminar on discipline construction and development. Guests attending the seminar included Tian Gang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), president of the Chinese Mathematical Society (CMS), and director of the International Center for Mathematical Research in Beijing (ICMRB); Xu Zongben, academician of the CAS and professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU); Zhou Xiangyu, academician of the CAS and researcher of the Institute of Mathematics and System Sciences of the CAS (IMSAS); Zhang Jiping, academician of the CAS, director of the Sino-Russian Center for Mathematics (CRCM) and professor of Peking University (PU), Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Mathematics and Systems Science vice president (legal representative) Zhang Ping, Chinese Academy of Sciences academician, Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Mathematics and Systems Science researcher, Zhejiang University professor Sun Binyong and our faculty representatives. Peng Shigo, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor of Shandong University, Jiang Song, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, researcher of the Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics, Beijing, Ye Xiangdong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor of the University of Science and Technology of China, and Luo Zhiquan, academician of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Canada, foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and vice-president of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), participated in the meeting through the online. The workshop was chaired by Tian Gang.

The meeting aimed to discuss how to crack the difficulties and problems faced in the development of mathematics discipline, scientific research innovation, the introduction of talents and the construction of faculty, and put forward corresponding ideas and solutions. The experts at the meeting conducted in-depth exchanges on the construction of young talent team, the positioning of discipline development, and the enhancement of scientific research capacity, and put forward targeted suggestions. Xu Zongben mentioned that the development of mathematics disciplines in SZU should take the road of characteristic development, combine with the situation of Shenzhen City, and actively utilize the regional advantages. Zhou Xiangyu said he hoped to continue to strengthen cooperation in the future to build a high-level mathematics discipline. Sun Binyong said that at present, the construction of the faculty of the mathematics discipline of SZU has made great progress, and in the future, we should continue to focus on the construction of the faculty and inject fresh blood into the development of the discipline. Peng Shigo proposed that Shenzhen is a city with great potential, and the Mathematics Discipline of SZU should seize the opportunity of the times, strengthen opening up to the outside world, and enhance the cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in the Greater Bay Area, so as to attract talents at home and abroad. Jiang Song proposed to strengthen cooperation with high-tech enterprises and vigorously develop applied and basic mathematics. Ye Xiangdong proposed that the mathematics discipline of SZU should strengthen the construction of basic mathematics, give full play to the advantages of applied mathematics, and make greater contributions to the scientific and technological progress and social development of China. Afterwards, experts and scholars from various institutions expressed their blessings for the 40th anniversary of the Mathematics Discipline of SZU and shared their experiences in the construction of the discipline.

Our young talents, Hu Yaohua, Zhou Ze, Zeng Jinsong, Wang Hanxiao, and Zhang Luchan, respectively, reported their work on the topics of structural nonconvex optimization theory and applications, circular stacking theory and related topics, complex dynamical systems, dynamic planning theory of stochastic control, and mathematical modeling and numerical simulation in materials science, and the attending guests discussed the report topics and provided valuable suggestions.

The success of this symposium provides new ideas for the development of mathematical disciplines, faculty construction, and talent cultivation in SZU, and will also play a great role in promoting the overall level of mathematical disciplines, mathematical scientific research and talent cultivation in our university.
